Centre For Effective Living

Tonight was time for speed runs. I have been following a Nike Run Club coaching program and it told me this is what I had to do tonight.

As I headed out I asked the runner in the family what they thought I needed to do to get through this ordeal. "Try to enjoy it". Ho-Hum. Then "Run into the wind, in a clear straight line, dont see the obstacles, like you're running through nothing and for everything". I was struck.

They had just described Flow. I quote Wiki here "In positive psychology, flow, also known colloquially as being in the zone, is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, flow is characterized by complete absorption in what one does, and a resulting loss in one's sense of space and time"

In high intensity, high engagement work it is very important to understand Flow, how to intentionally get there and ride the wave of flow without burning out. You need to be able to recognise it, and operationalise it.

Just as my run tonight got into the hardest part , my focus turned to Flow. I put away the phone, shoulders back, into the wind and ran the last sprint.

Why not do this with me in your own work and figure out Flow and Burnout Prevention for 2019? Join me and a growing group of professionals who have already signed up for our 15th February Launch.
