School Refusal and School-Related Anxiety

When a child becomes anxious about going to school, or refuses to attend altogether, it can feel overwhelming for the whole family. This is one of the most common reasons families reach out to us, and it is very treatable with the right support.

School Refusal and School-Related Anxiety - Psychology and Well Being Hub Gordon

Who this is for

Our child and adolescent psychologists regularly support families through school refusal and school-related anxiety.

How long does it usually take to see improvement?

Taking the step to begin therapy is a wonderful foundation for positive change. Because therapy is a process that builds over time through collaboration with your family and your child’s broader environment, there isn’t a set timeframe. We’ll work together to support your child, and after our first few sessions, we can give you a better feel for what their unique therapeutic journey might look like.

Every situation is different, and we’re happy to discuss this with you at intake. In general, gentle, structured steps back toward school tend to work better than either forcing attendance or allowing indefinite avoidance.

Yes, with your consent, we can work with the school to support a plan that works both at home and in the classroom.
