Just as it is important to manage your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing, looking after your spiritual wellbeing is also an important part of being human. Spiritual wellbeing involves the aspects of life such as faith, connection, values, meaning, and purpose. It can involve connecting with a higher power, practising a certain religion, connecting with your heritage, or contributing in meaningful ways to others or your community.
Why is Spiritual Wellbeing Important?
Our spiritual, emotional, and mental health are incredibly intertwined. Our spiritual wellbeing, in particular, helps us to understand our own behaviour and how we interact with and make sense of the world. Being in touch with our spirituality and our sense of purpose can help us to face and deal with stress and difficult times. Research also suggests that spirituality is often associated with better outcomes such as less depression, less substance abuse, and even living longer. This study also found that people with spiritual practices had improved immune functioning, higher self-reported quality of life, spent less on healthcare costs, and recovered more quickly from illness when spiritual practices were included.
How to Nurture Your Spiritual Wellbeing
There are many ways to nurture your spiritual wellbeing. These include:
- Prayer, meditation, and journalling
- Mindfulness and intentional breathing practices
- Creative expression through art, music, and beauty
- Participating in activities and experiences that produce awe
- Learning from difficult experiences and making meaning out of adversity
- Living in line with your values
- Creating habits and routines that help you experience contentment and satisfaction
- Reading books or religious texts which explore faith, meaning, philosophy, or values
- Volunteering for community or religious groups
- Participating in events that feel aligned to your beliefs or heritage such as NAIDOC week
